Gerlinger Steel & Supply Company has been a trusted partner to contractors, fabricators, manufacturers, and builders throughout Northern California and the West Coast since 1929. What began as Gerlinger Foundry and Machine Works has grown into a full-service steel distribution and fabrication company with locations in Redding and Woodland, California. Through four generations of family ownership, we have maintained a simple commitment: provide quality steel products, expert knowledge, and reliable service to every customer, every time.
Our History
From a machine shop in Redding to a West Coast steel company spanning four generations.
The Redding "Shop" building was built sometime between the turn of the 20th century and 1920. It was operated as Johnson Machine Works until partially destroyed by arson in the late 1920s.
Fred W. Gerlinger, Sr. purchased the facility, rebuilt it, and opened for business.
Gerlinger Foundry and Machine Works was incorporated in the State of California by E. E. "Bert" Gerlinger for his father, Fred W. Gerlinger, Sr.
Gerlinger Foundry and Machine Works started selling steel.
First electric welder purchased.
Bay 2 completed.
The County Shop was purchased. Bert's two younger brothers, Fred Jr. and Frank, joined the business. Materials were supplied for the rest of the decade to help build both Shasta and Keswick Dams.
Due to wartime fuel rationing, Dobbin Gulch Mining ceased operation.
Bay 1 completed, attached to the east wall of Bay 2.
First floor of the office built.
Bay 3 completed, attached to the west wall of Bay 2.
Supplied materials to road projects such as I-5 and I-80, and dam projects including Trinity, Whiskeytown, and Oroville, as well as many other powerplants and valley irrigation districts through the late 1980s.
Fred W. Gerlinger, Sr. passed away just before completion of the second floor of the office building. Second floor of the office built.
PG&E yard purchased for use as a truck yard.
Store built.
Bert's son, Fred M. Gerlinger (3rd generation), joins the company.
Gerlinger Steel began actively selling heavy metal working machinery.
Began operations such as shearing, forming, rolling, and shape cutting.
Welding Supply, who leased a building next to the railroad tracks, moved out. The Gerlinger Steel Store was relocated from Bay 2 to this building.
E. E. "Bert" Gerlinger passed away.
Sacramento branch opened by purchasing Sacramento Pipe Works Machinery.
Purchase of metal working machinery from Hix Bros in Stockton to add to the Sacramento facility's capabilities.
Opened Nevada City branch.
Added additional heavy machinery by purchases from March Metal and Fab, as well as Armco Steel.
Tim Gerlinger (4th generation) becomes the company Vice President and the Facility Manager of the Sacramento location.
Redding installs two Fadal CNC Machining Centers.
Installed 25 x 30 bundle cutting HydMech Vertical Miter Saw in Redding.
Installed our first new CNC laser machine and CNC press brake in Sacramento.
Purchased and moved to new Woodland facility with 9+ acres and 80,000+ square feet of building, consolidating our Sacramento and Nevada City branches.
11' x 60' CNC Oxy/fuel table installed in Woodland.
Installed our first 16" x 49' capacity tube laser in Woodland. Redding's first laser is installed, which is also the company's first flat fiber laser.
Woodland installs a new CNC laser/punch combo machine, and both Redding and Woodland install sister 350 Ton x 14' CNC Press Brakes.
New Woodland machines: 4th CNC 5' x 10' Plate Laser, CNC miter saw, CNC Quick Drill, and 1' x 12' Roundo Plate Roll.
Gerlinger Steel erects a 60,000 square foot Solar Structure in Woodland to produce upwards of 700 KW of power at peak efficiency, reducing reliance on the power grid and overall carbon footprint. The company celebrates its 90th anniversary in October of 2019 — made possible through the continued support and loyalty of our customers, and the dedication of our team.
Fred M. Gerlinger passes away after serving the company and the Northstate community for over 55 years.
Gerlinger Steel & Supply continues under fourth-generation family ownership, operating from our locations in Redding and Woodland, California. The same commitment to quality, service, and community that Fred W. Gerlinger, Sr. instilled in 1929 guides the company forward.
